Large hpoto of 34th congress 1856 election committee. A.Imagelink color#191978 ahover. Imagelink color#191978 avisited. Imagelink color#1d8a7c a. Imagelink img. Auctionimage border 2px solid #191978 avisited. Imagelink img. Auctionimage border 2px solid #1d8a7c. I am honored to offer this great historical photograph of nine members of the 34th u. S. Congress which made up the 1856 presidential election committee. This photograph is classified as extremely rare as there are only two that i am aware of to survive. The one i have up for auction, i feel is the original size of 13 5/8in. X 10.5in. Photo mounted on a 16 3/8in. X 13 5/8in.
Board. The other known photo is a unmounted smaller size of 12 5/8in. X 9.5in.
Being a reduction to fit in the col. John r. Johnston album, who was a employee of the jesse whitehurst studio in the 1850's who would have had access to the original negatives as i feel that the whitehurst studio is the photographer, though the photo is unsigned by a studio. Do a google search of images of 34th congress and you will find the other example of this photo for sale asking $17,000.00. Many of the men in this photo went on to do great things in american history which i will go inot more detail below.
I believe this photo once hung on a wall in the u. S. Treasury in room 55 of the first floor as looks to be designated to this room according to the information on the back written in pencil, most likely being sold at auction when the treasury was redecorated as this was a common practice which gave the public the opportunity to evne own items from the white house. This is not any kind fo reproduction being a original photo taken in 1856. The type of photographic process is a salt print from a wet plate negative being a short lived process as these type of photographs tended to fade in a short period of time if extra care was not taken during the development process. Not many of this type of photograph survive without being extremely fdaed but this photo survives with minimal fading which is contained to a smaller area on the left as it remains in vg condition having minimal fade with some foxing and staining, still having pliable paper not being brittle with no bends or creases. The men are identified below the photo which is original hand drawn caligraphy not being any kind of printed text. The men are identified from left to right ashikcman pennsylvania. Colfax indianna. Later becaem president u.
S. Grants vice president and was involved in the infamous u. S.
Crdeit mobilier scandal. Smith alabama. Watson ohio. Washburn maine.
Maj. Oliver missouri. John armour bingham ohio. Later became a judge advocate in the trial against those who conspired to assasinate president lincoln. Francis spinner new york. Appointed by pres. Lincoln as treasurer of the united states and was sucessful in getting women hired in the treasury dept. Stephesn georgia. Later became vice president of the confederate states of america. The others may have goen on to do great things but my reserch time is limited, but as it is this is one of the most historically important images that ebay has ever seen. The 1856 election win by the democrat james buchanan over republican john c. Fremont, basically delayed the freedom of southern slaves by 9 years until the end of the civil war in 1865. Would make a cherished centerpiece for the advanced collector of photographs, historical, political memorabilia etc. As this has many areas of cross collectability being the only item i have ever sold that i can say is a true national treasure. All my items come with a lifetime guarantee of authenticity with a unconditional satisfaction guarantee where you may return for any reason and get a full refund with shipping both ways within 30 days of receipt of item. Shipping i only chrage the exact amount to ship with no handling charges. Charges will be calculated at auction end and a invoice will be sent. Overpayments a $1.00 & up, will be refunded with undercharges at my expense.
